Exploring Value
“Color gets all the glory, value does all the work.”
Instructor: Phyllis Bryce Ely
Whether working from life, en plein air, or with photo references, the  key to a successful painting is the strength of its value structure.  The relationship of darks and lights throughout a composition will make your painting believable and help to tell your story. In this hands-on workshop, we will do an exercise to observe and isolate value in assorted colors, then create a small painting dedicated solely to value structure - not color. Next, you will create a second painting using color and your own photo reference.  Instructor will demo in soft pastels, however the exersice can be adapted to various media.  There will be an emphasis on the painting. Group review at the end of class.
Supplies: Painting medium of your choice (instructor will bring extra
soft pastels to share), supply of appropriate painting support (sanded
pastel paper with good tooth like Wallis, watercolor paper, canvas,
etc.) drawing board, easel if you like to work upright, brushes and
related paint supplies, tape, a color landscape photo (at least 4x6”)
for your second painting. (Instructor will supply reference image for
first exercise.)
Please bring your own snacks/drinks.

Monotype Printmaking en Plein Air
Instructor: Phyllis Bryce Ely

If you enjoy painting en plein air and would like to add a new  dimension to the experience, give this class a try. Instead of  painting outdoors on paper or canvas, we will paint with water-based  media directly on monotype plates in nearby Channing Philbrick Park.  After we make our plates, we will return to the gallery to print our  images on paper using an etching press. Making onotypes is inherently  full of surprises that lead to exploration of images and subject matter. Plates can be re-painted and  printed multiple times, and prints can be further printed and painted in this freeing back-and-forth process. This is a great way to shake  things up if you are feeling “precious” or stuck with your painting.
A supply list will be provided upon registration. It will include
basic water media like watercolor, gouache,
Derwent brand water-soluble color pencils, and water-soluble crayons.
You will also need many sheets of etching paper (22x30 is typical),
probably 3-4 per class. Monotype plates are included in the fee and
will be provided by the instructor. Plein air painting experience is
preferred.
4 classes:  May 22, (skip May 29 b/c Memorial Day), June 5, 12, 19

Watercolor Techniques for Landscape
Instructor: Paul Allen Taylor

This class will teach the application of watercolor in the “wet on wet” to “damp on damp” condition. Students will learn how to balance the amount of water vs. paint when attempting to create a variety of shapes and textures. Gaining control of the medium will be achieved through understanding the interlocking of edges and the required moisture at that location of the paper.  Thinking "shape" first will be the emphasis of this course as well as planning ahead. Subject selection and preparation before painting will be discussed.
Supply list available at registration.
